having avoided the examiners due to his solitary education, davyd's first year studying among other otkazat'niye students is cut rather short when grisha examiners visit his school for their annual checks, revealing him to be a durast. he is shortly transported to os alta to begin his education as a grisha in the security of the little palace at the age of ten.

after attending his first class on the small science alongside other fabrikators, his teacher baghra had refused to meet with him again for seemingly unknown reasons. from that point, davyd spends his time in the materialki workshops to further understand the small science, mastering his ability by his own accord and scientific understanding.

while his peers attend baghra's lessons, davyd spends most of these periods in relative isolation save for the company of another lone spirit who joins him in the workshops a few years into his schooling; yevgeniya safina, who became one of his only real friends in the little palace.

davyd igorevich kostyk is born to accomplished professors igor makarovich kostyk and natalya pavlova kostyka in the town of balakirev, where he is subsequently raised. due to his neurodevelopmental disorder, davyd is homeschooled for all of his primary education before he personally requests to enroll in the local secondary school, wanting to make new friends.

davyd begins excelling in his classes when he discovers that most grisha students are held back by the limitations that may be imposed on them by the arbitrary existence of orders and divisions within the academy. he secretly dabbles in various scientific disciplines (seeking to become prolific in the untapped potential of the alkemi) and weaves the multi-faceted nature of grisha abilities into his projects as he unravels the mystery behind the small science through his own private research.

upon officially graduating at the age of seventeen, he is offered a position to continue his service as a resident fabrikator directly under general kirigan's command.

shadow and bone.

general kirigan asks davyd to craft a pair of gloves for alina's demonstration at the winter fete.

davyd aids general kirigan in tracking down alina starkova after her desertion from the little palace. he is then consulted on the creation of morozova's collar, which he fashions for the darkling to forcibly wield alina's sun summoning powers. when his creation is used to destroy a part of novokribirsk, davyd is regretful of his part in massacring a city and retreats into the materialki workshops while the coup sends the palaces into a state of disarray.

⠀OCTOBER.⠀ ⸺

ruin and rising.

stuck underground while darkling, the usurper, searches ravka for the sun summoner, davyd spends his days aiding the apparat in his morning prayer ceremonies and concocting salves to help heal genya's wounds. having studied morozova's journals to great depths during this time, davyd later accompanies the dozen living grisha left in their team to look for the firebird after their escape from the white cathedral.

following the civil war's end in november 1892, davyd is offered a position as the materialki representative in the new grisha triumvirate, as well as an opportunity to pursue the research of combining otkazat'niye and grisha technology as the head scientist of the new tsar nikolai's nolniki army.

⸺ ⠀JULY.⠀

siege and storm.

the sun summoner makes her return to os alta after escaping the darkling's captivity, accompanied by his friend prince nikolai and his best friend genya. in collaboration with the prince and the remaining fabrikators of the little palace, davyd helps repair the hummingbird and crafts large dishes meant to help them defeat the darkling once they issue their impending attack. the dishes ultimately fail when the darkling charges into the grand palace on prince nikolai's birthday in august 1892.

they are chased into the royal chapel where genya is revealed to have been a spy for the darkling all along, but since had a change of heart when her time with alina and davyd had swayed her into defecting the darkling for good. they are all led into the white cathedral where they make their escape from the darkling.
